Dundee Derby win for Dryburgh

SWF Championship North Match Report

Dundee City West 1 Dryburgh Athletic 8

Dryburgh kept up their good form with a win today at a windswept Downfield Park. This was an eagerly awaited game and indeed the first city derby since both teams joined the revised Championship North league.

From the start it was clear that the strong wind - blowing right down the park - would dominate the match. Indeed the first half was peppered with half chances from the visitors but with the wind frequently carrying the ball out of the park. Meanwhile a point blank save from Megan Robb after 10 minutes showed the quality of the City West goalkeeper, while the visitors did find the net soon after but it was ruled offside.

The breakthrough came after 20 minutes with a wicked cross taking a defender’s deflection into the net. Alma Codegoni then scored 2 goals before half time, with the visitors also pulling one back, to make the score 3-1 at the break.

Playing into the wind in the second half meant a different game for ‘Burgh. 10 minutes into the half, goals from a Megan Robb shot and a Codegoni header began to put the game out of reach. Effective holding play in midfield from Zoe Moreland and Rachel Robbie was leading to more chances and set pieces, one of which was a Robb corner, with a Sophie Aitken bullet header making it 6-1. Hope Ramage was menacing down the right and good interplay with Beth Collins led to the latter storming through the defence to slot into the net. The final goal of the afternoon came from Stacey McFadyen with a chip over the keeper, a deserved goal after her hard work up and down the left wing the whole game.

So another win for Dryburgh and one which maintains their 100% league record.

Player of the match - Rachel Robbie.

Next game is next Sunday, away to Falkirk in the quarter final of the Championship League Cup.
