Match report
SWF Championship North
Dryburgh Athletic 10 Dundee City West 1
Last night’s “home” match for Dryburgh took place under the lights at Glebe Park, at the invitation of hosts Brechin City. There was lots of excellent football for the crowd to enjoy, including the special - and vocal - guests from Brechin City Girls.
In the early phase of the game, despite plenty pressure from Dryburgh, the City West defence was very effective in keeping them at a distance, although a Mel Gormley shot rattled off the bar after 15 minutes. Although there were more half chances for ‘Burgh, it was City West who took the lead midway through the first half after their striker bolted past the defence and finished well.
Dryburgh came right back into the game though, and their pressure eventually led to goals for Chelsea Lowney and Gormley, both after goalmouth scrambles, giving the hosts a 2-1 lead at half time.
The second half was a different story, with ‘Burgh turning on the style through some great passing and movement throughout.
Two early second half goals from Megan Robb, one knocked in from a corner and the other after a solo run, made the score 4-1, giving rise to a cacophony of noise from the Brechin girls supporting their adopted team, and which continued for the rest of the game!
Strikers Stacey McFadyen and Alma Codegoni were next on the scoresheet with a shot from distance and a tidy finish respectively.
Despite the efforts of the City West defence, who were still trying hard and chasing every ball, McFadyen was proving impossible to contain and dominated the left side, with the winger getting a further 4 goals during the second half.
Dryburgh’s 7th came from McFadyen finishing well after running on to an excellent through ball, followed by her header into the net after some head tennis in the box with Robb. The penultimate goal came through a poke into the net after a goalmouth scramble, then the scoring was completed when, once again, McFadyen was too sharp for the defence, being first to a loose ball after a free kick was played into the box.
Although this was a good solid performance with plenty goals and excellent creative play, there were also plaudits for the whole team’s overall play, with useful long passes, frequent changes of direction and play, and good use of both wings, including excellent pressing play from Tiegan Clark and young Gabby Watt down the right wing.
Player for the match - Stacey McFadyen
Next match is at home to Montrose, on 5th April (next Tuesday evening).
