SWF Championship Season preview

Dryburgh Athletic Women start their season this Sunday with an eagerly awaited match against central belt big guns Livingston Women. The teams head into a new phase of Scottish women’s football in the newly restructured Championship, which has amalgamated the top sides in the previous north and south Championship leagues to become one 3rd tier league on a national basis. The new league features 8 teams from right across Scotland, including Ayr Utd and Morton in the south west right up to Inverness in the Highlands.

Dryburgh can head into the game confidently, after such a strong season last year, including their famous win in the Championship Cup and a 3rd place finish in the league. They’ve also had positive performance in their 3 pre-season matches in the past few weeks against SWPL2 side East Fife and League One sides Stenhousemuir and Grampian. Especially pleasing was the integration and warm welcome for new signings into the team, giving the squad confidence for the challenges in the season, according to Dryburgh Women Head coach Owen Mackenzie:

“We are looking forward to the new season ahead, it will be a new fresh challenge for the squad and the coaching team.

There’s been a few changes within the squad, with a few moving on and the addition of Zoe Bruce, Clara Laing and Aimee Robertson. We also still hope to add a couple more, but the girls are excited for the challenge and ready to get started.

The aim is to finish as high up the table as possible and give a good account of ourselves. We know it will be toughest test we’ve faced since the formation of the first team in 2018 but it will be good to test ourselves up against this level of quality in new Championship.”

Sunday’s match kicks off at 1pm at Glenesk Park, Balfield Road, Dundee, admission is £3, with children free.
