Match preview

SWF Championship & League One Cup Final

Dryburgh Athletic v FC Edinburgh

Indodrill Stadium, Alloa

KO 2pm

Sunday 11th December

This Sunday sees Dryburgh Athletic make the trip to Alloa to a League Cup final for the second year running. They face FC Edinburgh in an eagerly awaited match against the current League One leaders who have yet to lose a league match all season, having won 11 out of 12 games to date, with one draw.

Previously known as Edinburgh City, the capital side play in the east of the city at the club’s recently refurbished Meadowbank Stadium, with aims to become a big name in the Edinburgh women’s football scene. Despite strong league form, including their recent league wins against their St Mirren and Edinburgh Caledonia, their most recent match last Sunday saw them exit the Scottish Cup in a tight match against Championship side Hutchison Vale. The game needed extra time to decide it, with Hutchy bagging the vital goal to seal their 2-1 win.

For Dryburgh, they go into the game on the back of two wins. Scottish Cup duties last Sunday meant a trip to the west, with ‘Burgh winning 5-1 against League One side BSC Glasgow. Despite a heavy pitch, the girls showed good levels of energy and fitness on a very heavy pitch, with a stand out performance from Chelsey Lownie capped by her pinpoint lob into the roof of the net to get on the scoresheet. That result was on the back of a solid win in the league a few days earlier under the lights at Station Park, with ‘Burgh winning 2-0 against Hutchison Vale.

Last year against all the odds Dryburgh defeated League leaders and Champions Montrose at the Falkirk stadium in front of around 250 Burgh fans thanks to a stunning Megan Robb goal.

After a mixed start to the this season Dryburgh surprised in form Glasgow side Rossvale with an assured 3-0 victory in the semi final at Airdrie’s Excelsior Stadium last month, a first half double from Megan Robb and an Alma Codegoni goal in the second half secured a deserved win and another place in the final.

Laura Boag - Captain

“All the girls are buzzing to reach the final and are looking forward to embracing what will hopefully be abother special occasion for the Club.

It has been a stranger than normal route to the final but I think we showed in the semi final what we are capable of. Its another great achievement from this squad and it has given the players and everyone involved at the club a massive boost at this stage in the season.”

Head Coach - Owen MacKenzie

“We are delighted for the girls to reach the final. It’s been a tough season so far in a number of ways but the girls have been working hard week in week out to improve. I’m glad it has given them the opportunity to step out in a cup final as, at senior level, cup finals don’t come round often.”

Recent games have had a factor in common - the very cold weather. The near zero temperatures and a chilly wind have now come to dominate the weather in these early days of December, and it looks like the cup final will be no different. With temperatures forecast to be around or close to zero, no doubt both teams will want to inject high energy levels into the game to keep warm. Meanwhile the big Dryburgh support travelling to the game will be getting on their winter woolies, hats and scarves to wrap up ready for the big spectacle.

So all in all, an exciting tie is in prospect on Sunday, with a big crowd expected in Alloa to cheer on the teams. Admission to the stadium is £5 on the day (cash or card), with u16s free. If anyone is from further afield and can’t make it to the game, the match will be shown on the SWF YouTube channel.

The Dryburgh Supporters buses will leave Lochee park at 12.15 sharp on Sunday so please make sure all travelling are there for 12 noon

We will be collecting all the bus money on the day

Adults £10 - U16s £5

Every Adult will be given a FREE match ticket (worth £5, as it’s £5 at the stadium without a ticket)

All U16s are FREE entry on the day so no ticket required

We are all so looking forward to the big match, and can’t wait to cheer on our fantastic Dryburgh squad - c’mon the ‘Burgh!!
