Match preview

Scottish Women’s Championship/League One Cup Semi Final

Sunday 3rd March

Dryburgh Athletic Women v Ayr United Women

All roads lead to Kelty on Sunday when we head down to New Central Park, home of Kelty Hearts, for our 3rd League Cup Semi Final in a row.

In the last 2 years, as we know Dryburgh have stepped up and won their semi finals and gone on to the Cup Final. Two years ago it was Ayr United we played, with only one goal separating the teams in the match played at Glenesk Park. It was scored by a young Beth Collins, who since  then has continued to play a key role in our squad as a fast paced wing back, most recently being player of the match in last week’s win against Hutchy Vale.

Last year’s semi final was played at the Airdrie Stadium, with ‘Burgh the underdogs against Rossvale. However, once again our girls memorably stepped up and won 3-0, with top performances right through the team.

We head into the game after a run of 3 league wins in a row, with the last 2 both being won 2-1 away from home. Last week’s game against Hutchison Vale saw us come back from a goal down, with goals from Olivia Jones-Burns and a Rachel Robbie penalty claiming the win and the 3 points. With us winning 4 of the 5 games since new year, we now sit in 5th place, only 2 points behind Inverness who sit in 4th.

Sunday’s opponents Ayr United have had a strong season and will no doubt be up for the challenge of getting into their first ever final. Their most recent game was 2 weeks ago against Morton, which they comfortably won 5-1. Earlier in the season against Dryburgh, they came from 2-0 behind to win 3-2 at Townhead Park in Cumnock, showing they are a capable and determined team. Being second place in the league demonstrates that they have put in consistently strong performances all season.

Sunday’s game takes place at New Central Park, Kelty with a 12 noon kick off.
